NAME: Alina Starkov
AGE: 21 (In the books she is 17 but for the show they were aged up but never given an age)

CANON POINT: Season 1. Episode 5. After her performance at the Winter Fete.

ABILITIES: Alina is a Grisha. A Grisha is a human that practices what they call the Small Science. Alina is the only known Sun Summoner which means she can harness and manipulate light. Although she discovered her power late and is still learning to master it, it turns out that she is a very powerful Grisha.

If she doesn’t use her abilities often she can start to grow weak and sickly. The more she uses her abilities the stronger and healthier she feels.

Some things she can do with her light: create a light shield, blind people with a flash, create heat to melt locks or keep her warm on a cold night.

VICES:
Self image/Confidence. Alina does not have a very high self esteem when it comes to her looks. She was born half Shu, half Ravka but she looks more Shu than Ravka. The Shu Han are the enemies to the south of Ravka and anyone that looks like Shu aren’t treated very well. Alina grew up being called names and treated differently and this has stayed with her throughout her whole life.
Reckless. Alina is pretty reckless especially when it comes to her best friend Mal. Her whole life she has fought to keep them together from tricking the Grisha test when she was young to burning maps so she could volunteer to go onto the skiff that was going through the Fold which most times is a death sentence. All because Mal couldn’t be tested or because Mal was on that skiff. She keeps a level head but Alina doesn’t think through the choices that she makes.
Not trusting. There really is only one person that Alina trusts completely and that is Mal. She has started to trust Genya and the Darkling, started to let them in, when Alina is pulled from her world. But the person that really knew her was Mal but that was before Alina knew she was a Grisha. Now Alina isn’t even sure who she is.

VIRTUES:
Compassionate. Even though she grew up being hated by most of Ravka, not once has Alina thought of not using her abilities to take down the Fold. She is scared of what they will think if she fails to bring it down. She is kind and caring and believes in second chances especially with the people she was growing to trust.
Headstrong. The young Sun Summoner is stubborn. Especially when she thinks she is right. She won’t back down from a fight, especially from a bully. And she will keep trying even if they throw her to the ground over and over again.
Loyal. She is incredibly loyal to Mal and Genya and anyone she thinks is a friend. Even when they have wronged her. She might disagree with you but if Alina thinks you are her friend she will have your back.

SURVEY

▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ 3. Alina isn’t outright rude to people but it does take her a bit to warm up and accept people as her friends. She doesn’t trust easily, growing up has made her hard that way, but given enough time she will think of someone as a friend.

▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
▷ 4. One of the life lessons Alina grew up with is that you hide your emotional breakdowns for when you are alone. You don’t cry in public. While she might empathize with someone crying she has enough control not to cry herself.

▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
▷ 4. Alina is reckless. When she gets an idea or a plan in her head she goes for it and if it goes off track then there really isn’t a back up. Like when she lit the maps on fire so she could volunteer to go on the same skiff as Mal. She didn’t take into consideration that they might send her whole unit into the Fold where most of them ended up being killed.

▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
▷ 2. While Alina can be emotional, and let them rule her head, she doesn’t panic under pressure. She might make the wrong choice or a choice too quickly but it isn’t out of panic.

▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
▷ 2. Incredibly so. An example would be that she had a scar on her palm that reminded Alina of Mal and the choice she made when she was younger to stay with him no matter what. She had it removed because she thought Mal and her past was holding her back.

▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
▷ 3. Alina regrets mistakes that she has made in the past but they don’t make her doubt her abilities or knowledge. She knows what has to move forward and do better.

▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
▷ 4. Alina very much follows her heart or tries to. She follows what she thinks is right and good. She is very more emotional than logical.

▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
▷ 3. She worries about Mal and what people think of her. She doesn’t worry so much about the future but more about the responsibilities people are putting on her shoulders like taking down the Fold or mastering her Sun Summoning abilities.

▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
▷ 4. If it is in a teasing manner, sure, she can enjoy that but when they are outright fighting or arguing, Alina will try and step in. She does not enjoy people fighting.

▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
▷ 4. Alina likes to be invisible. Her half Shu features already make her stand out in Ravka. And now her Sun Summoning abilities make her stand out even more. Alina isn’t a fan of being the center of attention. She rather be drawing somewhere quiet with no important responsibilities on her shoulders.

▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
▷ 4. While Alina is reckless, she does like to be prepared when possible. She won’t put something off just because it isn’t fun or it’s uncomfortable.

▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ 2. Alina is a kind, compassionate person and while she might not understand or know how someone feels because she has never been through it. She does can very much empathize with them, allowing them to feel what they need to feel without making it about herself.

▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
▷ 3. While Alina is an emotional person she loves her books, likes reading, and won’t back down from learning something new or talking through a theory or two. She just has very limited knowledge about many things.

▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
▷ 4. Growing up looking like the enemy in Ravka was not fun and so Alina does not have a very high self esteem when it comes to her and her looks. She was called names constantly growing up, treated differently, treated like the enemy and this has stuck with her even as has become one of the most important people in Ravka.

▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
▷ 4. She doesn’t dwell on past mistakes but she does dwell on past memories. She knows she can’t change her past and so Alina tries to be better in the future.
